From Digital to Physical - Setting Down the First Layers


As this project moves from conceptualizing to the physically crafting of a life-sized statue, we've reached a pivotal milestone: printing the first pieces. This phase marks the transition from the digital into the tangible. In this entry, I'll share insights into the initial printing experiences, including the setup of my workspace to accommodate the printers and the nuances of each machine contributing to this ambitious project.


Setting the Stage for Success


The environment in which 3D printing takes place can significantly affect the outcome. To that end, I've created basic enclosures for the CR-10 printers, serving a dual purpose: it shields the printer (and the print itself) from temperature fluctuations, which can impact print quality, and it keeps curious cats at bay, ensuring that both pets and projects remain safe.

The room that the printers are located in is the only heated room in my shop. I try to keep it at 55-60 degrees when printing.This time of year, late winter, early spring, the ambient temperature in the shop hovers at around 40 degrees overnight. The PLA that I am using for the prints seems to be handle this temp well.

After printing a few times on the PEI build plate that came with the Smart Pro, I dropped what I was doing to change over the other two build plates.

All three machines have textured PEI build plates now. When the machines finish the print job and the build plate cools completely, the prints slide off very easily. This is a welcome improvement over the older way of wiping a glue stick over the glass before each print and prying it off when completed.


Navigating the Print Duration


The printing times for these initial pieces vary widely, ranging from as little as 4 hours to as long as 36 hours. This variance underscores the complexity and size of the segments being printed, each requiring careful planning and monitoring to ensure success.


The Printers at Play


- CR-10 V3: The veteran of the group, acquired three years ago, has been a reliable workhorse. Its success in past projects made it a natural choice for this project. For continuity and confidence in performance, I decided to stick with this make and model.

- CR-10s Smart Pro: Purchased specifically for this project, this newer model boasts contained electronics and several design improvements over its predecessor. Though it shares much in common with the V3, its upgrades offer a more streamlined and potentially more reliable printing experience.

- CR-10s Pro V2: This machine, a secondhand acquisition from a local electronics group, came with its share of quirks. A few minor repairs were necessary to transform it into a solid, dependable printer for the project. Despite some initial skepticism, particularly regarding its remote extruder, it has proven to be a valuable asset.


In the vast sea of 3D printing technology, selecting the right printer for a specific project can be overwhelming.

One of the primary factors that drew me to the CR-10 was its relatively generous build volume. The ability to print large without compromising on detail or having to excessively slice the model into smaller parts was a crucial consideration. This feature alone positioned the CR-10 as a front-runner in the race against other contenders.

Diving into the world of 3D printer reviews can feel like navigating a labyrinth of craziness. For every positive review, there seemed to be a cautionary tale or a critical assessment. This was not unique to the CR-10; it appeared to be a common theme across similar machines and those within the same price range. Such mixed feedback can lead to hesitation and doubt, making the selection process even more challenging. Choosing who to listen to and who to ignore is a valuable skill to hone.


My journey into the world of 3D printing is not a new one. A few years back, I embarked on a project to convert an automated biotech machine into what turned out to be a somewhat functional 3D printer. This experience, while fraught with trials and errors, provided me with invaluable insights into the intricacies of 3D printers and perhaps helped me to go with the CR-10 in the first place.


Ultimately, the decision to go with the CR-10 was driven by a need to balance capability, cost, and my overall desire to be able to print larger pieces or components. The CR-10's build volume, combined with personal experience and a readiness to tackle potential challenges, made it a suitable choice.


In the world of 3D printing, and perhaps in many areas of life, there comes a point where one must step beyond the paralysis of analysis and take a leap of faith. This project represents just such a leap, fueled by a blend of research, intuition, and the resolve to create something extraordinary.

I believe that this project is a testament to the belief that with adequate tools and more importantly a clear vision, the most ambitious projects can be brought to life. A reminder of the importance of choosing a path and boldly moving forward, even if it is ever so slow, one layer at a time.


Preparing for Print


Once the models are finalized in Meshmixer and saved as STL files, the next step is slicing—preparing the digital model for printing by converting it into instructions the printer can understand. Using the Creality slicer, I tailor the parameters for each piece according to the specific printer being used, optimizing for the best possible outcome.


Keeping Track of Progress


With multiple printers at work and a complex array of pieces to be printed, organization is key. I've developed a system for tracking each piece from slicing through to printing, ensuring that no part is overlooked and that each contributes correctly to the whole. Reflecting on the Project So Far


These initial prints represent the first tangible steps toward bringing our vision to life. The excitement of seeing digital designs materialize into physical form is unparalleled. Each layer laid down by the printers adds to the anticipation of the final assembly, a monumental testament to the fusion of technology, creativity, and perseverance.
